The History

Alicia Malone, Founder
FOR OVER 30 YEARS THE PROGRAM THAT IS NOW IDENTIFIED AS BONDAGE BREAKERS, INCORPORATED, HAS ACTIVELY PURSUED THE MARGINALIZED POPULATION. IN 1988, UNDER THE "SUMMIT COUNTY WAY OUT PRISON MINISTRY", WHILE WORKING AS A GED ASSISTANT IN THE SUMMIT COUNTY JAIL, I REALIZED MY CALLING FOR 'PRISON MINISTRY'.

THREE YEARS IN THE MAKING, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF DR. ARTHUR E. KEMP, THEN PASTOR OF MT. OLIVE BAPTIST CHURCH, AKRON, OHIO, BEGAN "THE PRISON MINISTRY & PRAISE TEAM, INCORPORATED". IN 1991, FIRMLY ROOTED IN MATTHEW 25:36 ... ' I WAS IN PRISON, AND YE CAME UNTO ME.', WAS BIRTHED THE TRAVELING CADRE. GROWING THROUGH THE YEARS AS A TRAVELING TEAM OF 36, WE HAVE LOGGED NEARLY 5,000 MILES SHARING THE GOSPEL, AND INTERCEDING IN PRAYER FOR MEN AND WOMEN.

FROM 1989-1999 WHILE HOUSED IN MT. OLIVE BAPTIST CHURCH, THE PROGRAM GREW EXPONENTIALLY WITH TREMENDOUS SUPPORT SERVICES PROVIDED BY PAMELA DIX, PARCILLA HALL, KIM BEAUFORD, TIMOTHY MOSLEY, DAVIDS. MOSLEY, AND RON NOEL. WE DEVELOPED COGENT RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH OUR CORRESPONDENCE MINISTRY WITH BOTH THE INCARCERATED AND LOCAL JUDGES AND ATTORNEYS. THIS BROUGHT ABOUT OUR ADVOCACY MINISTRY BY WHICH WE SERVED OVER 600 MEN AND FAMILIES.

UPON MOVING TO THE COMMUNITY HEALTH BUILDING LOCATED AT 680 E. MARKET STREET, BONDAGE BREAKERS, INCORPORATED CONTINUED TO GROW AND FOR THE PAST 10+ YEARS AND PRESENTLY HAVE ESTABLISHED ANOTHER VOLUNTEER SUPPORT SERVICES PROJECT AT THE SUMMIT COUNTY JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER ON DAN STREET. WE HAVE DEVELOPED THE 'SAY YES TO WORK' PROGRAM WITH THE AUTHOR, DON TABOR'S, PERMISSION. A NUMBER OF MEN AND WOMEN HAVE HELD WEEKLY MEETINGS ON THAT CAMPUS.

AFTER THE UNTIMELY PASSING OF A FAITHFUL BOARD MEMBER, MAXINE WINTERS, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MAXINE WINTERS SCHOLARSHIP. THIS EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE INITIATED AN ANNUAL AFFAIR ON THE WEEKEND IN WHICH THE BIRTHDAY OF REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING'S IS CELEBRATED. A GRADUATING STUDENT OF AN INCARCERATED PARENT WOULD BE AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP. OVER 20 YEARS TO DATE WE HAVE AWARDED 17 SCHOLARSHIPS.

COUPLED WITH THE MAXINE WINTERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, BONDAGE BREAKERS, INCORPORATED ESTABLISHED ANOTHER YOUTH TRAINING PROJECT (ANGEL TREE) WITH A CAMPGROUND BACKDROP. FOR OVER 18 YEARS THE PROJECT HAS TAKEN 486 CHILDREN OF INCARCERATED PARENTS ON A WEEK LONG CAMPING TRIP THAT PROVIDES MENTORING, TRAINING, FUN TIMES, AND SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT. THIS ENDEAVOR HAS BEEN RENAMED THE DAVIDS. MOSLEY CAMP, AFTER THE PASSING OF ITS BIGGEST SUPPORTER AND MENTOR, DAVID S. MOSLEY.

THROUGH FAITHFUL VOLUNTEERS AND WITH CONTINUAL SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE, IT IS THE GOAL OF BONDAGE BREAKERS, INCORPORATED TO CONTINUE TO SERVE NEEDS, 'TO THE LEAST OF THESE'.
